Experiment with the EQ of Your Delay Pedal

Basic delay pedals usually don’t have the option to EQ the sound of the delays that come after the original attack. But if you’re working with one that does, experiment cutting some of the high frequencies from only the delay sound.

In the real world of sound, the echoes off surfaces lose high frequencies with each reoccurring echo. The sound gets rounder and less defined with each repetition. An echo has been described as a shadow of the original sound and as we know with sight, the edges of shadows are not as crisp as the object casting the shadow.

One thing that’s a drag about pedal delays is that the delays are usually nearly exact replicas of the original sound and they tend to get in the way of the music and clutter things up – that is unless they’re perfectly timed with the beat.

By rolling back the high end on the delayed signal, the sound becomes more of a shadow than an annoying ‘hrack hrack’ replica.
