Artists thrive on tapping the creative part of their brain, and many are good at imagining a whole range of sensory events like sound, vision, physical sensations, and written words. Imagination is the product of absorbing of all kinds of stimuli and then letting the brain cook up a creative soup that can be shared with others.
For musical artists, the fact that imagination is the product of the absorption of all kinds of stimuli means that it’s important for you to expose your brain to a range of styles and artists. Without that exposure, your creative motor can be stuck in an echo chamber of musical ideas and you’ll just keep creating the same thing –over and over.
I recommend you take yourself outside your listening comfort zone. Devote time to listening to music you’re not normally exposed to. Give something new a serious listen and do a bit of research into its origins. You don’t have to stay there, but your visit outside your world will give you a fresh perspective.
