Mistakes happen. You WILL make a mistake when performing. And so will your bandmates. Not everyone reacts the same, but it’s important to think about how you SHOULD react.
So, first, if a bandmate makes a mistake, shaming them with a dirty look or groan will never make things better. All that does is undermine the confidence that we all need to play our best. The moment has passed. Let it go. Maybe even offer an empathetic smile or chuckle.
If YOU make a mistake, treat yourself with the same grace as you do with your bandmates. Sure, it can feel embarrassing – and even devastating to mess up, but again, the moment has passed and you can’t change it. But you can keep trying for a better performance from that point forward.
Controlling your reaction to mistakes will take some work on your part – and over a long period of time. But whether you’re a hot-head or super mellow person, try to work on this.
If you’re a human, you’ll get plenty of chances to improve your reactions.
