We all know that music is a tool for expression. We use chord types and progressions, melodies, rhythms, tempos and arrangements to convey our feelings with the guitar. One element that is sometimes overlooked in lessons is how to manipulate the time.
You know that in speaking, we often stretch out and slow down certain words or phrases when we want them emphasized. Soulful singers do this all the time and we as guitarists should learn to do the same.
A good way to start getting familiar with manipulating the time is to practice playing guitar on a very simple motif with a metronome or track.
- Practice playing as tight as you can with the click.
- Practice playing slightly in front of the click, almost rushing.
- Practice playing slightly behind the click, almost dragging.
This exercise helps you become comfortable manipulating the time for the sake of expression. Practice this with a track as well.
