A capo is a valuable tool, but I’ve heard some people call it a gadget for the lazy. It’s not. The most common reason to use a capo is to be able to use the common chord voicings with open strings in keys that would make that impossible.
The common chord voicings with open strings have a distinct sound because of the open strings. I’ve been in many situations where the singer wants to transpose a song that really needs that “open string chord sound.” And while you could technically play some of these voicings without a capo by barring, most of them would be physically difficult and just wouldn’t have the same sound.
Buy a good quality capo and keep it in your case. You might need it someday.
