Who Are You On the Gig?

Who are you on the gig? It’s a good idea to think about how you come off to your bandmates.

Bands are, of course, people who ‘band together’ to play music like a team. The idea is to collectively move the audience. That’s much easier to do when everyone on stage feels comfortable, respected and like they can musically trust the people around them. It’s a vibe of unity.

This feel of unity starts before a note is played, before you even show up at the rehearsal or gig. It starts when you get the call to do the gig. Present yourself like a pro – but a likeable pro. Too many great musicians have an arrogant vibe from the start and that’s immediately off-putting and sets a tone that is counter to a vibe of unity.

You don’t have to be the life of the party, but whether you know it or not, having good interpersonal skills can directly affect how your bandmates and you sound musically.
